Schilling Opposes "Mega-bus" Spending Bill
Washington,
Dec 16, 2011 -
Washington, DC – Congressman Bobby Schilling (IL-17) released the following statement after voting against the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2012, the “mega-bus” spending bill to cover Fiscal Year 2012:
“I appreciate the work that has been done in the House of Representatives this year to return to regular order and stop spending money we don’t have. We have cut discretionary spending, changed the conversation in Washington from ‘how much can we spend?’ to ‘how much can we save?,’ and cleaned up the mess left behind by the 111th Congress, which did not pass a budget for 2011. I commend the Appropriations Committee and House Leadership for their efforts.
“Despite their work, I am unable to support the final spending bill. I have voted throughout the course of the year this year on measures to avoid a government shutdown. Though this bill contains items I do support, combining nine spending bills together with little time to review represents business as usual in Washington and I cannot be a part of that.
“I understand that this Congress had to clean up the mess of last year’s Congress, but the fact of the matter is that we did not complete each individual Fiscal Year 2012 appropriations bill. I look forward to working with my colleagues next year to return to regular order and individually send each appropriations bill to the Senate for consideration.”
