Senate Committee approves THUD bill supporting Honolulu Rail Transit

Thu, April 19, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations today approved a bill that would provide $250 million for the Honolulu Rail Transit project, Chairman Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka, U.S. Representative Mazie K. Hirono and U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa announced today.

The full committee voted 28 to 1 in support of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill, which includes $2,043,520,000 for the Federal Transit Administration's capital investment grant program, $250 million of which was requested by the Obama administration for the Honolulu rail project.

Chairman Inouye voted in favor of the bill.

The measure now goes before the full Senate for a vote before going to conference with the House.

"I would like to thank my colleagues on the committee for supporting this important piece of legislation.  The Honolulu Rail Transit project is critical to helping manage the flow of traffic from Leeward Oahu to town and back.  For far too long we have debated and discussed this project and in the meantime commuters living on that side of the island have been forced to battle traffic gridlock in order to go to work, take their kids to school or otherwise move about the island.  Not only will the rail project provide commuters an alternative to driving, it will create much needed jobs for our construction industry and help lessen our dependence on imported fossil fuels.  I will continue to do everything I can in the Congress to secure funding for this project and ensure its timely completion," said Chairman Inouye.

"I thank the Appropriations Committee and applaud the Obama Administration and my good friend, Senator Inouye, for their efforts to include these critical funds for the Honolulu Rail Project in the transportation appropriations bill for 2012.  This project is a vital part of the Hawaii's future.  Hawaii's Congressional delegation is doing all it can to see this project completed for the people of Oahu, who suffer outrageous commute times and some of the highest gas prices in the nation," said Senator Akaka.

"Mahalo to Chairman Inouye and the committee for their leadership. This is another positive step forward for this important transportation project," said Congresswoman Mazie Hirono, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. "This $250 million matches the amount requested by President Obama and demonstrates the continued and strong federal support. This is an investment in Oahu's future that will help to reduce gridlock and provide more transportation options for our people and visitors," said Congresswoman Hirono.

"I would like to say mahalo to the Senate Appropriations Committee for their continued support of the Honolulu Rail Transit Project. This historic project will provide Hawaii's growing population with a reliable transportation alternative, while alleviating congestion on our roadways and creating local jobs. I will continue to work with the Hawaii Delegation to ensure our rail project continues to move forward, and is completed in a responsible and timely manner," said Congresswoman Hanabusa.
