Congressional Art Competition

Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the Nation, as well as in our Congressional District.

The contest is open to all high school students in the 17th District. Winning art from each congressional district is displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year, where it will be seen by thousands of people. The first place winner also has an opportunity to meet with other similarly talented young artists at the unveiling of their art at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Entries from Texas’ 17th Congressional District this year should focus on the theme “Honoring America’s Brave Military Men & Women.”

I invite all high school students whose permanent residence address is within the 17th District to participate. Art works entered in the contest may be up to 28 inches by 28 inches (including the frame) and may be up to 4 inches in depth. The art work may be

  • Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
  • Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
  • Collage
  • Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
  • Mixed Media
  • Computer Generated Art
  • Photography

Deadline for all submissions is Friday, April 13 at 5:00 pm.

Guidelines for the Congressional Art Competition can be accessed here. All entries submitted must be original in concept, design and execution.
