STATEMENT BY CONGRESSMAN WM. LACY CLAY (D) MISSOURI
IN REACTION TO PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ADDRESS TO CONGRESS

Washington, DC – "President Obama gave the nation a clear and energetic vision of how his bold agenda will help our economy recover and how we will restore the American dream for working families.  He believes, as do I, in the fundamental strengths of this country and he trusts the American people enough to tell them the truth.  As he outlined, now is the time to act boldly and wisely to rebuild our economy, restore fiscal sanity, stem the tide of foreclosures and stimulate millions of new jobs by investing in infrastructure, education, healthcare technology and renewable energy.

The President committed to being honest about the difficulties ahead and he challenged Congress and the American people to pull together, confront boldly the problems we face and take responsibility for our future once more.  I am proud to join him in that mission.
That's why the President has committed to honest budgeting that shows the true costs of our programs and policies and does not rely on gimmicks to hide or mask deficits; bringing responsibility back to budgeting by paying for new programs as we go (PAYGO); conducting a line by line review to eliminate wasteful and ineffective programs; and restoring a sense of fairness and balance to our tax code by finally ending the tax breaks for corporations that ship our jobs overseas.

This is not a time for fear or doubt, this is a time for faith and action. No challenge is too big for Americans to overcome and we will emerge from this crisis stronger, better and ready to compete in a global economy."
