Rep. Culberson: The federal government doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman John Culberson (TX07) issued the following statement on Tax Freedom Day:

“It’s ironic that on the day Americans file federal income tax returns, we also celebrate Tax Freedom Day – the day that we have finally worked enough to pay all of our taxes for this year.  Taxpayers work 107 out of 365 days to pay federal, state and local taxes.  This year, Americans will pay $2.62 trillion in federal income taxes alone, yet the federal government continues to live well beyond its means with borrowed money.  The federal government doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem.

“Our debt remains the number one threat to our national security.  Raising taxes on individuals and businesses is not the solution.  In fact, it is just the opposite.  When Americans keep more of their own money, they will reinvest in the economy, creating more jobs and increasing revenue.  We must not punish success with financial burdens; it is counterproductive to our economic recovery and contrary to attaining the American Dream.

“As a staunch fiscal conservative, I strenuously oppose the epic spending and tax increases we have seen by the current administration.  Instead, I support a budget that would cut taxes and reduce spending – and require a constitutional amendment to balance the budget.  It is time to let Americans keep more of what they earn and for the government to spend less.”
