U.S. Rep. John Culberson (R-Dist. 7) took a break from getting grilled by reporters and got grilled by some of his youngest constituents at Bellaire High School Friday. A month before the Texas primaries, Culberson spoke to members of the Young Republicans and AP Government students about his and his party’s line on hot-button issues including healthcare, abortion, limited federal government, and even the Trayvon Martin case.

“I work for you and your parents,” Culberson said. “I work for District 7.”

Culberson spent much of his time speaking out against the Affordable Care Act, currently awaiting judgment by the Supreme Court. He took issue with its provision that requires most Americans to purchase health insurance. “If they can make you buy health insurance, why can’t they make you buy a car?” he asked.

AP Government teacher Teresa Herrin, who also sponsors both the Young Republicans and the Young Democrats, said the talk was especially significant since the primary was delayed until May due to challenges to redistricting maps, making it possible for more students to vote. The school will hold a voter registration drive in the next few weeks.

“We’ll be able to register nearly every senior for the first time,” Herrin said.
