Rep. Culberson with 1st Place winner Judy Oh

HOUSTON, TX – This week, Rep. John Culberson (TX-07) hosted a reception for local student-artists in Congressional District 7 to showcase their entries in this year’s Congressional Art Competition.  Memorial High School student, EunJoo “Judy” Oh, took first place for her colored pencil artwork entitled, “The Blacksmith.”

“This is one of my favorite events,” said Rep. Culberson. “The talent showcased in this competition never ceases to amaze me.  I want to congratulate all the students, teachers and parents that participated.  Each piece of art is uniquely inspiring and I wish Judy the very best of luck in the national competition.”

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. This year, Rep. Culberson’s office received 23 pieces of artwork.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of local artists in each district select the winning entries, which are then displayed for one year at the United States Capitol.

Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

Southwest Airlines representative, Christine Ortega,  awarded the winner with a certificate for two free round-trip tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend the ceremony.
