Rep. Berman Announces Funds to Fight Valley Traffic Congestion
Washington, D.C. - Rep. Howard L. Berman (D- Van Nuys) announced today that Congress will approve funding for several projects designed to ease traffic congestion in the San Fernando Valley.

“The average Valley resident wastes dozens if not hundreds of hours a year sitting in traffic,” Berman said.  “This time would be much better spent with family, at work, or taking part in some other activity that benefits our society.”

“I am working with my colleagues on a long-term strategy to ease traffic congestion in the Valley,” Berman continued. “This strategy includes the construction of new carpool lanes on the San Diego and Golden State freeways, greater use of high speed buses and light rail where appropriate, and a host of other projects such as those approved by Congress in the transportation funding bill.”

“At my request, the bill includes $300,000 to repair and expand the South San Fernando Valley Park and Ride facility in Encino,” Berman said.  “As a transfer point for five major MTA bus routes, this lot is an important transit hub for Valley residents commuting to Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles.”

“The transportation bill also includes $300,000 for the City of San Fernando public transit system,” Berman continued.  “This will help the City purchase low-emission buses and trolleys to improve the mobility of local residents, especially those that depend on public transportation.”
“Finally, the bill includes $325,000 for a parking area that will both preserve the natural habitat and enhance access for joggers, equestrians, and others that wish to enjoy the Hansen Dam Recreation Area,” Berman concluded.  “The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy will oversee this project, as my partner in improving the environmental needs of the area.”

These projects are included in the conference agreement for H.R. 2989, the Transportation-Treasury appropriations act for fiscal year 2004.  The House and Senate will pass the bill this week, and the President is expected to sign it into law in the near future.
