Berman Secures $150,000 for Historic Preservation of San Fernando's Lopez Adobe

Van Nuys, CA - Rep. Howard L. Berman (D-CA) announced today that he has obtained $150,000 in federal funding for the historic preservation of the Lopez Adobe.  The funds are contained in the FY 2004 Interior Appropriations Bill Conference Report passed by the House of Representatives this afternoon.

“I pursued this funding,” said Berman, “because the Lopez Adobe is a national treasure and deserves federal money to help with its preservation.  This historic building  is a source of pride for the City of San Fernando and the entire San Fernando Valley.  I am pleased to play a role in helping to save it.”

Built in 1882, the Lopez Adobe is a historical, cultural and architectural landmark.  It is featured on the National Register of Historic Places and is widely recognized for its unique mixture of both mission style and Victorian architecture.

The two story Adobe was built in 1882 for Don Geronimo Lopez of the Mexican Army who carried the flag of truce between General Andres Pico and Coronel John C. Fremont that led to the end of the war between Mexico and California. It was the first two-story adobe built as a residence in the San Fernando Valley.  The first local newspaper, the San Fernando Times, was printed in April, 1889 from within the Adobe.  The Adobe’s inhabitants have lived through Mexican rule, secularization, the Mexican-American War, statehood and finally life as Mexican-American Citizens of the United States.   The home was purchased by the City of San Fernando in 1970 and opened to the public in 1975.  It has been furnished with historical artifacts and heirlooms.

“Unfortunately,” said Berman, “the ravages of time have left the Adobe in great need of  repairs.  Extensive work will be required to make sure that the structure and its contents will be around for future generations to enjoy.  These federal funds will be used to help with preservation, improve irrigation and landscaping, and train preservationists and community members.”

Dr. Jose Hernandez, Mayor of the City of San Fernando, stated “This is a significant contribution towards restoring the historic and cultural fabric of our community.  It is important for all of us to recognize the significance of our historic landmarks for the generations to come.  The Lopez Adobe will be a house museum for the benefit of the entire community.”

Julie Ruelas, President of Friends of the Lopez Adobe and Council Member of the City of San Fernando added, “I am very pleased with Congressman Berman’s efforts to seek much needed funding for the Lopez Adobe in spite of all the cuts that are taking place.  The Lopez Adobe is called the jewel of our city and it is an important architectural and cultural icon in the San Fernando Valley.  It represents our history and the origins of our city.”
