Dr. Benishek: “Great Education Means More Jobs For Northern Michigan”

HOUGHTON, MI:  Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today hosted a roundtable meeting with business leaders and educators at Michigan Technological University (MTU) to discuss the importance of preparing students for the jobs of the future.  

“Education is key for job growth in Northern Michigan.  It’s essential we give our students a quality education so that they are prepared to pursue the jobs of the 21st Century.  I was privileged to host today’s meeting at Michigan Tech and will develop an action plan to help our local teachers and universities promote science, math and engineering education,” said Dr. Benishek, a surgeon from Iron River and lifelong resident of the Upper Peninsula.  

Dr. Benshek’s roundtable meeting was an informative discussion on the importance of STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math) education. The STEM roundtable meeting provided an opportunity for area educators to share best practices of how to teach STEM concepts.  The conversation also centered on ways educators and job providers can work together to better prepare students for 21st Century jobs in Northern Michigan and around the world. 

“I have visited hundreds of small businesses across Northern Michigan and many job providers have told me about their need to find employees who have the skills and training for the jobs available.  Having the right training offers job-seekers the real chance to find a good-paying position in our region. Frankly, great education means more jobs in Northern Michigan,” added Dr. Benishek, who served on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology during the 112th Congress.
