U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) voted today for a measure which would force the federal government to make nearly $1 trillion in spending cuts without increasing taxes. The package also clears the way for a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution and assures Social Security and Medicare would continue to cover benefits beyond August 2.

"Our nation is on an unsustainable path of borrowing and spending. Forty cents of every federal dollar the government spends is on loan from creditors. Opportunity, prosperity and liberty in America depend on freedom from crushing debt," Emerson said. "This bill is a principled response to a government that spends too much, regulates with a heavy hand, and expects generations of Americans long into the future to bear the burden of the debt we are incurring today."
