Student Services

I believe that education is the backbone of America. However, having raised 3 children of my own, I am well aware of the rising cost of higher education.  I assure you that I will support ways to lessen the financial burden of higher education for students.

As a service to the 7th District's students, it is my hope that the following information provides resources for those interested in going to college.

Financial Aid Information for Students
This Information Web page, prepared by the Congressional Research Service for Members of Congress, guides students through the process of locating and applying for financial aid. [Updated October 2008]

The Basics: Getting Started
Start gathering information early. Free information is readily available from:
- High school counselors
- College and career school financial aid offices
- Local and college libraries
- U.S. Department of Education

Ask questions: counselors may know if you have exceptional circumstances that affect your eligibility.
Be organized: use calendars to keep on track.
Keep copies of all forms and correspondence: you must reapply for aid each year.

For Parents:
- Save money long before your child attends college.
- Michigan's College Savings Plan ("Section 529" plan)
- FinAid: for Parents
- Tax incentives for higher education expenses

Beware of scholarship scams -- don't pay for free information!

If you suspect a scam, please contact:
