Nunnelee Newsletter: Standing Firm

Dear Friends,

Divided government means finding common ground to solve the big problems facing America. However, the President seems to think the definition of common ground is Republicans abandoning our principles and going along with whatever he wants. This will not happen.

Two weeks ago, I asked for your opinion on what we should do about the combination of tax hikes and automatic spending cuts coming at the start of the new year known as the fiscal cliff. The response was overwhelmingly in favor of stopping the tax hike and cutting spending.

I agree with you. Cutting spending in a way that does not compromise national security and addresses the structural causes of our debt must be a part of any agreement. We are borrowing one trillion dollars per year; there is no realistic way to close that gap without serious spending reforms.

When it comes to taxes, my view is simple: I oppose raising taxes because it would kill jobs, harm economic growth, and not deal with the real problem: out of control spending. Our tax code is a complicated, unfair mess. We need reform that creates a simpler, more transparent tax code and, most importantly, encourages sustainable economic growth. This is the best way to generate revenue for the federal government, not higher rates.

House Republicans are the last line of defense against an unrestrained liberal agenda of higher taxes, more spending, and more debt. As the fiscal cliff approaches, we will stand firm on our principles and fight for the best possible solution for you.

Stay in touch and God bless,
