Boswell Briefing: Reaffirming Our Commitment to Civility

Dear Fellow Iowan,

A year ago this Sunday, many lives were cut short and forever changed as the result of a senseless act of violence in Tucson, Arizona. The shooting, which targeted a constituent event held by my friend and fellow colleague Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, spawned a vast range of powerful emotions among the American people. As we pay our respects to those who lost their lives that day and those who continue to live with their scars today, we should also reaffirm our commitment to civility.

In wake of the tragedy, the discussion of civility seems to have waned as time has passed – and regardless of political motives or not – this horrible act should still serve as a reminder to respect one another and acknowledge our difference of opinions during political discourse.

study published last year by Allegheny College in Pennsylvania found that 95-percent of Americans believe civility in politics is important for a healthy democracy, and 87-percent believe it is possible for people to respectfully disagree about politics. These results shouldn’t come as a surprise to us, but should instead highlight that we can disagree on certain issues, work towards a solution, all while remaining civil with one another. It’s not always easy, but it’s what the American people should expect from us as their representatives in Congress.

We will soon begin the second session of the 112th Congress, and I will continue to strive to put differences aside so that we may accomplish those priorities like continuing to restore the economy and strengthening our middle class. I ask my fellow Members of Congress to do the same.

As always, I continue to look forward to representing the people of Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District in this new session. Please feel free to cotact my office in Washington, D.C. at 202-225-3806 or in Des Moines at 515-282-1909 if we can be of service to you.

Sincerely,

Leonard L. Boswell
Member of Congress
