As of August 1, 2012, women now have guaranteed access to additional preventive medical services. Due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), new health insurance plans must provide women with preventive care with no co-pay or cost sharing. This will benefit more than 800,000 women in Colorado and more than 47 million women across the country.

Here is a list of the eight services now covered as provided by the ACA.

  • Well-woman visits
  • Gestational diabetes screening that helps protect pregnant women from one of the most serious pregnancy-related diseases
  • Domestic and interpersonal violence screening and counseling
  • FDA-approved contraceptive methods, and contraceptive education and counseling
  • Breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling
  • HPV DNA testing, for women 30 or older
  • Sexually transmitted infections counseling for sexually-active women
  • HIV screening and counseling for sexually-active women
These new preventive measures can help defend against chronic diseases, which are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths among Americans each year and 75% of the nation's health spending.

Before the Affordable Care Act, insurance plans charged women for these services or did not even provide them. As a brother, son, husband and father, I am glad to see we are making women’s healthcare more accessible and affordable.

77th Anniversary of Social Security

This week marks the 77th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act. Our Social Security system is one of our nation's most successful programs. Today, 160 million workers participate in Social Security and are currently building protection for themselves and their families through their contributions, and 55 million seniors, disabled workers, widows and children rely on it for economic security each month. Social Security’s all-in-one lifetime benefit guarantee is unique – it’s life insurance, disability insurance and retirement security all rolled into one. This is all with protection for your family, protection against inflation, and a guarantee you won’t outlive your benefits – there’s nothing like it in the private sector. To find out more about the history of Social Security, visit their website at www.socialsecurity.gov.
Voter Registration App

Our right to vote as American citizens is sacred. Voting rights give us the power to be included in the political process and have a voice in our government. Our nation’s election laws should underscore accountability, accessibility and fairness. Every registered voter should have the opportunity to cast a ballot for the candidate of his or her choice.

Please click here to visit my website where you will find an interactive guide to understand the requirements to vote in Colorado and information on how to verify your registration. If you have a Colorado driver's license, you can register to vote or update your voter registration online. If you don't have a Colorado driver's license, you can use the paper registration form and mail it to, or visit, your local county clerk to make changes to your registration. Even if you voted in the past, please take a few minutes to verify this important information to make sure there are no surprises when you go to vote.

Constituent Success Story: Michael from Arvada

My office is here to help the hard working people of the 7th Congressional District cut through some of the red tape when dealing with a government agency. If you are having an issue with a federal agency, please call my office. My staff and I will always do our best to help. I'm proud my office was able to help Michael receive work authorization just in time for his wife's pregnancy and delivery. Without his work authorization, Michael and his wife would be without income due to maternity leave.

"Congressman Perlmutter's office provided resources to help me get my work authorization. They explained the process and connected me with the appropriate offices. This was such a relief as we are so new to the community. Now we can enjoy living in beautiful Colorado. Thank you Congressman Perlmutter."
