Washington, DC - 4/09/2001 - Today, Congressman Ander Crenshaw (R-FL) made the following statement on President Bush's release of his detailed budget:
"President Bush's detailed budget is a responsible commitment to the future of our nation and our children and it fully supports the blueprint he released in February. I am confident that as the legislative process unfolds over the next several months, Congress will work to make sure that President Bush's recommendations are given due consideration - especially since our numbers are very close to his numbers.

The President's budget puts hard working American families first by refunding taxpayers a considerable amount of money they overpaid in taxes. At the same time, the President's budget adheres to the philosophy of prioritizing and making responsible fiscal choices, including paying off the nation's debt at a record rate, improving education for our children, increasing funds for our national defense, and protecting Social Security and Medicare.

I was pleased that this budget begins to rebuild our armed forces and make America strong again. Most importantly, the President's budget makes sure that a clear and focused defense strategy drives our defense spending. This budget allows for enough flexibility to ensure that additional military funding priorities can be met once the Administration has completed its top-down review," said Ander Crenshaw.
Washington, D.C. - 3/29/2001 - Today, Congressman Ander Crenshaw (R-FL) voted in favor of the second part of the tax relief plan proposed by the White House and Congress, which eliminates the marriage penalty tax on our working families and doubles the per-child tax credit.
"The family is at the core of our society and the foundation of our nation," said Ander Crenshaw. "Today's passage of this bill means victory for the American family - we doubled the per-child tax credit from $500 to $1,000 and eliminated the marriage penalty so couples will no longer be penalized for being married," added Crenshaw.

Doubling the child tax credit will mean that more than 81 million children will qualify for the $1,000 child tax credit and families will be able to spend or save the additional money however they wish.

"Children are the future of our country and doubling the child tax credit gives parents more money to make ends meet so they can get some new school clothes for the kids, pay their high electric bills and fill the minivan with gas," added Crenshaw.

Crenshaw was an original cosponsor of H.R. 6 and was active in shepherding the bill through the legislative process. The Marriage Penalty and Family Tax Relief Act provides roughly $400 billion over ten years in tax relief to hard working Americans by eliminating provisions in our current tax code which punish working couples by taxing them at a higher tax bracket. The marriage penalty taxes the income of the second wage earner - typically the wife - at a much higher rate than if she were taxed only as an individual.

"Middle income families are hardest hit by the marriage penalty - this is a no nonsense middle class tax relief proposal that will allow nearly 57,000 couples in my District and approximately 25 million couples nationwide to keep more of their own money each year," added Crenshaw. "I think the unified support of my freshman GOP colleagues on this legislation is a testament to the priority this Congress has placed on providing tax relief for hard working families."

According to a study conducted by the Heritage Foundation, 56,876 couples are hindered by the affects of the marriage penalty in Florida's Fourth Congressional District. According to the same study 1,176,623 couples are affected by the same penalty throughout the entire state of Florida. On average couples pay $1,400 dollars per year in taxes due to the marriage penalty.

H.R. 6 passed by a final vote of 282 to 144.
