Debt and Budget

Our nation is experiencing severe economic times and while American citizens are tightening their own belts, the federal government continues to spend at an unprecedented level. The National debt has now surpassed $15 trillion, and annual deficits are continually exceeding $1 trillion. This trajectory is dangerous, and simply unacceptable. 

From my first days in Congress I have been appalled by the business as usual spending occurring in Washington. Our out of control debt is a danger to our National security, a drag on our economy, and a massive and unfair burden placed on our children and grandchildren who will be forced to pay for our reckless behavior.

I strongly support a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution to force Congress to live within its means and balance the budget; I am a cosponsor of H.J.Res. 2, which would propose such an amendment. I am also an original cosponsor of H.R. 2560, The Cut, Cap, and Balance Act of 2011 which will cut spending immediately, cap future spending at reduced levels, and require Congress to pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. 

I will continue to work to force Congress to live within its means and find real solutions to stop the out of control spending occurring in Washington.
