Rep. Brian Bilbray Calls California Dream Act a Nightmare for California Taxpayers

"The Dream Act, whether it is adopted federally or in California, is a nightmare for lawful U.S. citizens seeking higher education. California's AB 130 and 131 put American students in direct competition with illegal immigrants for already limited financial aid opportunities, further encourage illegal immigration, and reward illegal behavior with tax-dollars. Allowing undocumented students to access publicly funded financial aid, such as Cal Grants, impacts the funding available for citizens. Seats in the classroom and tuition aid are the two most important opportunities students posses and are two priorities we must reserve for Americans." -- Rep. Brian Bilbray (CA-50), Chairman House Immigration Reform Caucus

Congressman Brian Bilbray Hits the Brakes on Outrageous Gas Prices

"The ethanol mandate has contributed to higher prices at the pump, fewer miles per gallon and dirtier air. The amount of federal ethanol subsidies should also concern Americans worried about our country's $14.3 trillion debt. This bill will save tax-payers valuable dollars at the pump and encourage innovation within the industry to develop cleaner, more reliable alternative forms of energy such as algae-based fuels."

Congressman Brian Bilbray's Statement on Supreme Court's Decision Upholding Arizona's E-Verify Law

Today's Supreme Court decision that upholds a state's right to revoke business licenses of companies that knowingly hire illegal workers is a giant leap in the right direction for meaningful immigration reform. Congress must take the next step and enact laws that end our implicit encouragement of illegal immigration and address its cause: employers who exploit illegal labor. Implementing the E-Verify system is something Democrats and Republicans must work closely together on to achieve.

Congressman Brian Bilbray's Statement on President Obama's Immigration Reform Speech

The President provided plenty of good examples for success stories of legal immigrants in his campaign speech today. But exploiting their success stories as justification for amnesty to an estimated 11-20 million illegal immigrants who have violated our nation's laws and cut in line is completely irresponsible. While the crime rate and number of illegal crossings along the border is down, the federal government has still not done enough to address the source of the problem -- employers who use illegal labor.

Former President Bush, President Obama, the men and women of the armed forces, and especially the United States special forces should be commended for their bravery and determination to seek justice no matter how long it takes." -- Rep. Brian Bilbray

'We need to ratchet up the urgency,' he said, referring to trends such as a decline in venture capital investment and growing pressure for companies to move research and development overseas. 'This is one place Democrats and Republicans have to start talking across the aisle,'" Bilbray said.

Science, Not Fear, Should Drive America's Energy Policies

Issues: Energy, Jobs

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has a long-standing record of safety. Our robust regulatory infrastructure has accounted for the possibility of a "station blackout" like what occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The Japanese lost on-site and off-site power, which paralyzed their cooling systems. Our plants, however, are prepared for such an event.

Congressman Brian Bilbray Statement on the Possibility of a Government Shutdown

"I do not want the government to shutdown, but the bottom line is Washington needs to get its finances in order ... In the past two years the government has increased spending by 80 percent. With one in ten San Diegans out of work, I doubt my constituents have increased their budgets anywhere near that amount. I was sent to Washington to make a difference and stop business as usual so that the next generation of Americans inherits a country with more freedom and a higher standard of living."
