  1. Must read op-ed by @Nancy Pelosi in USA TODAY.

"We can do better -- and we have. Democrats are the only ones who have enacted a plan that extends the solvency of Medicare without cutting benefits through the Affordable Care Act."

  4. Honored today to receive the support of my colleagues to remain as Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Committee.

The 113th Congress promises to be vital to the future of so many issues within the Committee’s jurisdiction. We must reform our tax code so that it is fairer, simpler and promotes job growth; protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare; maintain federal unemployment insurance for Americans who continue to look for work; and promote increased trade in ways that spread its benefits more broadly. Throughout, we must help ensure continued job growth as we rebuild our economy.
  5. Have you or someone in your family lost a job? Are you struggling to find work or to learn new skills?

How have unemployment insurance benefits affected your life? Have they helped you pay your bills or stay in your home?

What kind of job training or reemployment assistance programs are in your community? Did you receive training or job search assistance?

Ways and Means Committee Democrats want to hear your thoughts on extending federal unemployment benefits and on proposals to create new jobs, including proposals made by the President. Through this eforum we want to gather the information Congress needs to understand conditions in American communities across the nation.
  6. Rep Sandy Levin made the following statement on the floor today urging his colleagues to sign the discharge petition that would bring H.R. 15 up for a vote: “This discharge petition frames the issue immediately before us: Will Republicans take America over the cliff – and the middle class tax cuts with them – in order to protect tax breaks for the very wealthy? Will they take the economy with them over the cliff?"
  7. Once again, the House Republicans are going to have some difficulty making the math add up.

Bottom line: Plausible tax expenditure limitations that protect middle-class families and incentives to give to charity would raise far less revenue from the well off than is needed for a major budget agreement.
