Ending Oil Subsidies, Protecting Clean Energy Jobs, and Reducing the Deficit

May 18, 2012 Issues: Economy and Jobs, Energy & Environment

Dear Friend,

I wanted to give you a quick update on legislation I’m supporting, the IMPACT Act, which will:

  • Promote American-made clean energy technologies
  • End subsidies to large, highly-profitable oil companies
  • Cut our dependence on foreign oil
  • Create a new generation of American jobs

The IMPACT Act supports:

  • Environmentally-friendly onshore and offshore wind production
  • Clean and Safe renewable energy production – solar, geothermal, biomass, landfill gas, and hydropower
  • Electric vehicle production and clean energy manufacturing, including energy efficient appliances
  • Energy efficient home construction and retrofits
  • New era of natural gas-powered trucks and vehicles

We can make these investments in America’s future – and pay down our deficit by more than $11 billion – by ending the billions in taxpayer provided subsides that currently go to some of the world’s largest, most profitable multinational oil and gas companies.

Especially at a time when Central Coast drivers are paying over $4 for a gallon of gas, I don’t believe taxpayers should also be forced to hand over $4 billion in subsidies to Big Oil each year.

In the months ahead, I’ll be pushing the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives to bring the IMPACT Act, and other bills like it, to a vote.

It’s time we transition to a cleaner, safer energy future that relies on American-made clean energy and technologies to reduce our dependence on oil.

Thank you for this opportunity to update you on important energy issues before Congress.

As always, please feel free to pass this along to family and friends.
