WILMINGTON — Congressman John Carney (D-DE) today issued the following statement in recognition of Delaware Day and Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. December 7, 2012 is the 225th anniversary of Delaware becoming the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
“Today marks the 225th anniversary of Delaware becoming the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and join our great nation.
Delaware’s founding fathers saw the vision and genius of the form of government laid out in the Constitution. In fact, Delaware’s own Gunning Bedford, Jr. was instrumental in helping smaller states protect their own interests by establishing a body, the U.S. Senate, that ensures equal representation for all.
December 7th is also the anniversary of one of the darkest days in our nation’s history, the attack on Pearl Harbor. As we go about our day, let us take a moment to honor those members of America’s Greatest Generation that were killed 71 years ago in service to their nation, as well as the veterans and active duty military members of all eras that sacrifice so much for the freedoms and values outlined in our Constitution.”
