UPI: Hayworth: 'No higher priority' than jobs
Saturday January 07, 2012
WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Nan Hayworth, R-N.Y., Saturday called on the Democratic-controlled Senate to act on nearly 30 jobs bills passed by the House.
"Leaders in Washington should have no higher priority this year than getting our economy back to creating jobs," Hayworth said in the weekly Republican media address.
She said it's "disappointing" the Senate has not acted and with one vote, each of the bills could go to the president for his signature.
Republicans, Hayworth said, are "hopeful" that in his State of the Union address, President Obama "will express a willingness to work with Republicans to enact all of these jobs bills."
While a jobs report Friday showed the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest in three years, nearly 13 million Americans are still seeking jobs.
Hayworth said the Obama administration had pledged three years ago the economic stimulus plan would keep unemployment below 8 percent.
"Unemployment has now been above 8 percent for 35 straight months, the longest such stretch since the Great Depression," she said.
She said House-passed jobs legislation would address "excessive regulation," encourage entrepreneurship and force the federal government to spend within its means.
