The Photo News: Recognition for Slain CIA Agent

MONROE — U.S. Rep. Nan Hayworth has introduced a bill in the House of Representatives that would designate the post office on Route 17M in Monroe as the “National Clandestine Service of the Central Intelligence Agency NCS Officer Gregg David Wenzel Memorial Post Office.”

?Wenzel, who was born and raised in Monroe, was killed in the line of duty on July 9, 2003, while working for the Central Intelligence Agency’s National Clandestine Service in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. His CIA affiliation was not revealed publicly until June 2009, when he was honored with a star on the Memorial Wall inside CIA Headquarters.

?“When a man has given his life to protect our American liberties, honoring him through the tradition of naming a post office to honor his extraordinary service to our country is both fitting and inspiring, “ Hayworth said in the press release announcing her effort. “Our deepest gratitude goes to Gregg’s family for their sacrifice.

?“While no memorial, however appropriate, can remove the pain of parents and loved ones when they lose a child,” the congresswoman added, “I hope that they will find comfort in Gregg’s receiving this eminently deserved posthumous recognition.”

Wenzel graduated from Monroe Woodbury High School in 1987, from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1991 and from the University of Miami Law school in 1994. He worked as a public defender in the state of Florida before joining the Central Intelligence Agency. He made this choice because, in his own words, he wished “ to live for a purpose greater than himself.”

?His family has lived in Overlook Estates for more than 30 years. After the CIA’s veil of secrecy was “uncovered” in 2009, the Village of Monroe and the Board of Overlook Estates honored his service by changing the name of Cheesecock Drive to Gregg Wenzel Drive.
