Poughkeepsie Journal: Hayworth discusses jobs, Arizona shooting in weekly Republican address

Job creation is the focus of this week’s Republican address, delivered by Rep. Nan Hayworth, R-Mount Kisco, who represents the Town of Poughkeepsie; City of Beacon; and towns of Wappinger, Fishkill, East Fishkill, Beekman, Pawling and Dover.

Hayworth’s address tackles the Republican “Plan for America’s Job Creators” and legislation related to jobs passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, that has yet to be adopted by the Senate.

“Leaders in Washington," Hayworth says in the address, "should have no higher priority this year than getting our economy back to creating jobs."

President Obama and a representative of the national Republican Party deliver weekly addresses via radio and video. On Friday, a report from the Labor Department said the economy added 200,000 jobs in December. The unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent, the lowest in nearly three years.

Hayworth, who represents 19th Congressional District, is a GOP negotiator working on legislation designed to create jobs. Hayworth in her address also discusses the one-year anniversary of a shooting in Tucson, Ariz., that critically injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and claimed six lives on Jan. 8, 2011. Giffords continues to recover after being shot in the head during the rampage.

"One year ago this Sunday," Hayworth says in her address, "a madman opened fire on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her constituents outside a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona. Six people were killed, including Gabe Zimmerman, an aide to the congresswoman. In those difficult hours, Americans reminded the world that no act of violence would silence the dialogue of democracy. All of us who have the privilege to serve with Gabby continue to pray for her recovery. We remain grateful to those who have sent thoughts and prayers to her, to her family, and all those who were affected."
