NY Daily News Voice of the People: Saving Money for Commuters

Fishkill, N.Y.: Re your July 11 editorial “No, no Nan”: As a frequent rider and former commuter on Metro-North, I have been a tireless advocate for public transportation. I supported the mass-transit tax credit as a member of the House-Senate Conference Committee last winter. Although we prevented a payroll tax increase and cuts to Medicare, the transit benefit had to be excluded at that time. When cuts to mass transit funding were proposed in the transportation bill, I joined Republicans and Democrats in opposition. As a result, the final version passed in June included $17 billion in mass-transit funding — but, unfortunately, it also did not include the mass-transit deduction. That’s why I introduced the Commuter Savings Act, to increase the mass-transit tax deduction from $125 per month to $240. I am proud to lead on this issue, continuing my efforts to protect commuters and mass transit. Rep. Nan Hayworth, M.D., 19th Congressional District
