Mid-Hudson News: NextGen Air Transportation System Moves Forward, FAA Official Tells SAC

STEWART AIRPORT – The local lobbying effort to have the FAA locate its Next Generation aviation system, to replace the current radar system, at Stewart Airport, is gaining momentum.

The Stewart Airport Commission has gone on record asking the FAA to locate the facility at the Newburgh area airport and at its meeting on Tuesday, Commission Chairman James Write announced Congresswoman Nan Hayworth and State Assemblywomen Nancy Calhoun and Annie Rabbitt have all sent letters of support.
FAA Regional Administrator Carmine Gallo told the commission Stewart will be considered.

“I think what they are looking for is a real estate parcel that will allow the new facility and the only decision made so far is that it will be in New York State somewhere, so they are looking at all the opportunities,” he said.

The new headquarters, which would mean hundreds of jobs for the area economy, would replace the New York TRACON and New York Center radar tracking centers in New York City.
