Mid-Hudson News: New Effort Underway to Gain Recognition for Purple Heart Anthem

CORNWALL – State Senator William Larkin and Congresswoman Nan Hayworth have launched a new effort to gain recognition for a song written by a local man to honor Purple Heart medal recipients.

Cornwall resident Warren Barootjian Michaels composed “Purple Hearted Heroes” as an anthem to those who have been awarded the medal for being wounded or killed while serving the country.

Larkin, himself a retired Army lieutenant colonel, backs recognition for the song.
“I think it’s most appropriate,” Larkin said. “We have the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ and others and I think this would fit in very fine.”

Hayworth also feels the song is worthy of honoring Purple Heart recipients.

“It’s a way of representing in music the feelings that are in people’s hearts when they think about all that is involved in defending our freedoms,” Hayworth said.

Larkin has sent a copy of the song to the Military Order of the Purple Heart in hopes that organization embraces it.
