Mid-Hudson News: Major Kennedy Called a Patriot

MID-HUDSON – As the word of the death of Maj. Thomas Kennedy of West Point, spread Friday, condolences poured in.

“The long line of patriots who have given their lives for their country was joined on August 8 by Major Thomas E. Kennedy,” Congresswoman Nan Hayworth said Friday. He was one of two soldiers killed in Kunar province in Afghanistan when a suicide bomber set off an improvised explosive vest.

“Major Kennedy was only 35 years old. His death leaves a young family without a father, a mother and father without their son,” Hayworth said. “They too bear the heavy price of war, and they will need our prayers and our support.”

The congresswoman said Kennedy “was not lost in vain so long as we remember him and honor his sacrifice with a renewed appreciation for all that our soldiers and their families do to assure our safety and protect our freedoms.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo and he, along with all New Yorkers, “mourn the loss of this outstanding officer. We will remember his honorable service to our nation and we are grateful for his dedication to duty.”

The governor has ordered that flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-staff “in honor of and in tribute to our state’s service members and those stationed in New York who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.”
