HHS Awards Guam $202,855 in Federal Financial Assistance

Oct 29, 2012 Issues: Health

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services two grants totaling $202,855. These funds will be used to support Maternal and Child Health Services and the Guam Rape Prevention Education Program.

  • $187,830 was awarded to Maternal and Child Health Services to develop, implement and evaluate services related to improving the health status of Guam’s women and children, particularly low-income populations who have limited access to healthcare. Funds will be used to support a continuum of care that includes prenatal, postpartum, family planning services and cancer screenings for women of childbearing age.
  • $15,025 was awarded to the Guam Rape Prevention Education Program to educate youth, students and people with disabilities.

“These grants will help provide critical support services for women and families on Guam, including those in most need of our assistance,” said Congresswoman Bordallo. In particular, these funds will help some of the most vulnerable residents of our community, including our sons and daughters and people with disabilities, learn more about how to prevent sexual violence and rape. Further, the Maternal and Child Health Services grant will be used to improve the accessibility and delivery of healthcare services for children and expectant mothers. I commend the Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services for working to secure these grants, and I look forward to these funds benefitting our community.”
