Congressman Alexander Congratulates Alexandria School for Earning Presidential Fitness Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Jamie Hanks | (202) 225-8490

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, today congratulated JB Nachman Elementary School for being named a President’s Challenge “State Champion School” by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN).

The PCPFS State Champion award is presented annually to three schools in each state with the highest number of students scoring at or above the 85th percentile on the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test.

The five assessments of the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test measure four components of physical fitness: a one-mile run/walk for heart and lung endurance; curl-ups for abdominal strength and endurance; a “sit and reach” stretch for muscular flexibility; pull-ups for upper body strength and endurance; and a shuttle run for agility.  In addition, instructors are encouraged to design units so students can gradually improve their physical fitness levels to meet those outlined by the president’s program.

Alexander congratulated JB Nachman Elementary School for receiving this award.

“No one can argue against the benefits of an active lifestyle,” said Alexander.  “Schools are in a unique position to instill at an early age the importance of physical fitness.

“I commend the hard work of the students and the dedication shown by the instructors.  Earning this merit is a great honor, and all at JB Nachman Elementary School should be proud.”

U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, represents Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District and serves on the House Appropriations Committee.
