Pacific Business News: Hawaiian education initiatives get $42M

Native Hawaiian education programs and initiatives will receive $41.8 million in federal funding during fiscal year 2011 from the U.S. Department of Education, Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka announced Monday.
Funding will go toward early and pre-school education, Hawaiian language immersion curriculum, recruitment and retention of Native Hawaiian teachers, programs linked to literacy, math and science skills, language arts and social studies, higher education scholarships, gifted and talented programming, vocational education and culturally targeted drug prevention and education.
The specific recipients of the monies were not immediately available.
