H.R.2816 : Promoting Health as Youth Skills In Classrooms And Life Act

Summary: Promoting Health as Youth Skills In Classrooms And Life Act - Amends the Department of Education Organization Act to establish an Office of Safe and Healthy Students in the Department of Education to assume the responsibilities of the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools and expand such responsibilities to broader health and physical education issues. The bill amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to include health education and physical education in the definition of "core academic subjects." It requires each state to determine the most feasible measure for assessing students in health education and physical education, including through adaptive assessments, to measure student knowledge and performance against state standards. The bill authorizes the Secretary of Education to award grants to, and enter into contracts with, local educational agencies (LEAs), community-based organizations, and nonprofit organizations to initiate, expand, and improve health education programs for students in kindergarten through grade 12, especially in rural areas.

H.R.2818 : No Child Left Outside Act of 2011
Summary: To provide temporary housing during school breaks to students who are homeless or in foster care.

H.R.2869 : School Athletic Facilities Restoration Act of 2011

Summary: In the bill, the Secretary is authorized to make grants, on a competitive basis, to local educational agencies for the construction, renovation, or repair of school facilities that are primarily used for physical education, athletic contests or exhibitions, or athletic extracurricular activities, such as team sports. The funds made available should be used to supplement, and not supplant, any other Federal, State, or local funds available for construction, renovation, or repair of school facilities.

Strengthening our Education System

I will always cast my vote for education policies that strengthen our school systems and help prepare our young people for the jobs of the future.  I am committed to supporting policies that educate our children from the cradle to the workforce.

Undoubtedly, education begins at birth.  There are clear advantages to quality pre-school and Head Start programs as both programs jumpstart language and critical thinking skills at important developmental stages.   For these reasons, we must fully fund comprehensive educational opportunities for our youngest Americans.

Giving our children a head start is only the beginning.  We must also provide sufficient funding for our educators' professional development, learning aids, education technology, and useful assessment tools.  With consistent funding and policies that adapt to our students’ changing needs, more students will actually graduate high school.

We must also address the issue of better access to higher education.  College should be affordable. All Americans should have an opportunity to attend college or develop a trade sufficient to support his or her family.  I am proud to have supported increases in funds to programs to the Pell Grant through the Recovery Act.

For my district and all of America, I will continue to promote enhanced policies and programs to strengthen our Nation's public education system.
