  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Veterans

Congresswoman Sutton believes that we have a moral responsibility to care for our troops and veterans. As the proud daughter of a World War II veteran, she is committed to providing our veterans with the benefits they deserve, taking every opportunity to meet with our soldiers, veterans and their families to make sure their needs are being met. Congresswoman Sutton has met with troops at deployment ceremonies, visited Walter Reed to see the care our wounded warriors are receiving, met with veterans at memorials in Washington DC, and traveled to Afghanistan and Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany to visit our troops.

Congresswoman Sutton has taken the lead on compensating our soldiers affected by “stop-loss” policy that kept soldiers in the service beyond the term of their enlistment contract. Under the stop-loss law she originally introduced in 2008, servicemen and women – including members of the Reserve components – who had their service extended due to stop loss after September 11, 2001 are eligible for “stop-loss” pay of $500 per month for each month their service was extended.

Supporting legislation that meets the needs of the more than one million veterans in Ohio is a top priority for Congresswoman Sutton.  During her time in Congress, she has joined her colleagues to strengthen quality health care for 5.5 million veterans through a 70% increase in veterans’ health care and other services.  Congresswoman Sutton cosponsored and voted for the GI Bill for the 21st Century, which restores full, four-year college scholarships for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans—on par with the educational benefits available after World War II.  She also cosponsored and voted for H.R. 403, the Homes for Heroes Act, which would provide shelter for homeless veterans and homeless veteran families, and help prevent low-income families from falling into homelessness.

For her strong commitment to veterans' issues, Congresswoman Sutton was named Legislator of the Year for 2009 by the Ohio American Veteran's Association (AMVETS).
