  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Jobs & Economy

In the fall of 2008 and early 2009, the nation faced the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression. The economy was losing, on average, 700,000 jobs per month and the GDP growth rate dropped to negative 6.3 percent – the worst since the 1982 recession. The banking industry nearly collapsed and a freeze in lending contributed to record levels of home foreclosures.

As a growing number of Ohioans faced life-changing situations, it was clear to Congresswoman Sutton that inaction was not an option. The Congresswoman voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) of 2009, which has saved and created tens of thousands of jobs in Ohio and included the largest tax cut in American history.

Investments from the Recovery Act have stemmed job losses, created new jobs and are rebuilding Northeast Ohio. Ninety-five percent of working Americans have seen benefits from the Making Work Pay tax cut, and the Recovery Act has significantly expanded unemployment and low-income benefits to help Ohioans most affected by the recession.

The Recovery Act is working to stabilize the U.S. economy, helping those most harmed by the economic crisis and rebuilding a stronger foundation for the future of Northeast Ohio and the nation as a whole. The Recovery Act has successfully created and saved jobs in Ohio through funding for green technology research and development, as well as investments in road, rail and water infrastructure.

Congresswoman Sutton knows Northeast Ohio can lead the way in job creation with a new economy based on transforming our energy future. Ohio’s 13th Congressional District has the skilled workforce necessary to manufacture 21st century technologies to transform our auto industry, help consumers save money and create jobs.

Equal Pay for Equal Work

Congresswoman Sutton believes in equal pay for equal work, and that any disparities in wages should be job-related, not sex-based. To help end this form of wage discrimination, the Congresswoman was a strong supporter of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which overturned the Supreme Court's 2007 Ledbetter v. Goodyear decision that made it much more difficult for women and other workers to pursue pay discrimination claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
