  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Homeland Security & Foreign Affairs

Congresswoman Sutton is committed to the security of our country and the communities of Northeast Ohio. With her support, the House passed legislation in August 2010 that is now law, to support the Border Patrol, security fencing, and needed infrastructure and technology.  She also joined her colleagues in the Ohio delegation in supporting the Ohio Northern Border Initiative, which works to secure the Lake Erie maritime border.

As a proud member of the Law Enforcement Caucus, Congresswoman Sutton worked to expand the language for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants enabling cities to rehire or retain much-needed fire-fighters, as well as supporting Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants for additional officers and resources for local police departments.

In addition to the protection of our security at home, Congresswoman Sutton supports taking steps to promote security and stability abroad.  She shares many of the concerns regarding the development of a nuclear program in Iran, and she cosponsored and voted for H.R. 2194, legislation to toughen sanctions on Iran to promote regional stability and ensure security for the United States and its allies.  Congresswoman Sutton is also hopeful that peace can be achieved between Israel and the Palestinian people and that a solution can be reached to address the humanitarian needs of innocent civilians.

As the United States remains involved in Afghanistan, Congresswoman Sutton believes that our brave troops and their families should not be asked to continue to sacrifice without a clearly defined mission with achievable results.  She supported an amendment requiring that the Administration provide a plan and timetable for drawing down our forces in Afghanistan and is a cosponsor of legislation calling for a clearly defined mission and responsible strategy for our military operations in Afghanistan.

Supporting global health initiatives is very important to Congresswoman Sutton.  She has supported funding for global health efforts, including prenatal care, multilateral HIV/AIDS programs, and a response to the influenza pandemic.  She was proud to cosponsor and vote for H. Res. 863, urging the United States and the world to mobilize cooperation and resources to fight pneumonia, as well as cosponsor H. Res. 1155, which supported World Tuberculosis Day and reaffirmed the commitment of Congress to address tuberculosis.
