  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Return to Issues & Legislation

Congresswoman Sutton believes that the American people should not have to worry about the safety of the products they use, the toys they give their children to play with or the food they and their families eat. For far too long, we have been reading story upon story about dangerous toys and contaminated food. Imports from foreign countries continue to grow and many manufacturers from foreign countries fail to adhere to even basic safety standards. This relationship between the growing import safety crisis and American trade policy is notable and requires us to strengthen our oversight here at home.

Food Safety

No American family should have to worry about whether the food they and their children eat will make them sick, send them to the emergency room, or worse. That is why Congresswoman Sutton was proud to sponsor sweeping food safety legislation signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011 that will fundamentally improve the security of our food supply, giving the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandatory recall authority and additional necessary tools to protect Americans from future food-borne illness outbreaks. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act will also empower the FDA to trace foods when safety issues arise, quarantine food supplies in contamination cases and impose larger penalties on companies that violate food safety rules. This bill will also increase FDA inspections of food facilities and improve traceability - all to help keep unsafe food from supermarket shelves.

Foreign Manufacturers Legal Accountability Act

Every year, many Americans are injured, sometimes fatally, by dangerous products that have been manufactured abroad and imported into the U.S. Recent examples include toxic drywall, faulty infant cribs, lead paint in children’s toys and defective tires. In 2009, 83 percent of the products recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission were manufactured in a foreign market. We cannot allow foreign manufacturers to continue to undercut U.S. manufacturers by disregarding the safety of their products, thereby endangering our consumers and costing us jobs. Originally introduced in February 2010, Congresswoman Sutton’s Foreign Manufacturers Legal Accountability Act would enable American consumers to hold foreign manufacturers legally accountable for injuries from defective products in the same way that American manufacturers are held legally accountable.
