Sarbanes Announces Grant Funds to Assist with BRAC Job Placement

Washington, DC – The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation has been awarded a $7.66 million National Emergency Grant that will assist the employees, contractors and military spouses who have been affected by the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) to compete for federal and BRAC jobs in the region.

“In these difficult economic times, we are fortunate that BRAC is bringing tens of thousands of new jobs into Maryland,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “This funding will allow our state to provide robust workforce training for Maryland jobseekers and ensure we are fully prepared for the opportunities to come.”

Administered by the Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning, the grant funds will be dispersed through Maryland One Stop Employment Centers across the state where jobseekers can go to receive career advice and training.  It is estimated that BRAC will create as many as 20,000 direct federal jobs by September, 2011 with another 40,000 indirect jobs to follow by the end of 2015.
