Graves Provides Flooding Resources on Website

(Washington) U.S. Congressman Sam Graves is encouraging people preparing for rising flood waters to visit his official website containing flood resource links through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Sixth Congressional District is bordered by the Missouri River from Rock Port to Boonville. In preparation for any potential flooding event, people are encouraged to visit the Congressman’s website at www.house.gov/graves and scroll down to the flood resources section. The site includes valuable information like tips on how to best prepare for a flood, cope during a flood, and recover after a flood.

The problem began last year with record snowfall and was made worse this spring by heavy rains in the upper basin. By mid-June, record flows on the Missouri are projected to increase to about 150,000 cubic feet per second. The amount of water in the Missouri River will likely top several levees throughout Missouri and has already caused breeches in two levees in Northwest Missouri. It’s possible that flooding may reach levels not seen since 1993.

“Everyone needs to be prepared,” said Graves. “We are already seeing the effect that this water can have on our homes and land in Northwest Missouri. Quick action now can save more headaches in the long run.”

Graves discussed the situation directly with Brig. Gen. John McMahon, commander of the Northwestern Division of the Army Corps of Engineers last week. Graves and Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) have invited the General to tour parts of the district this week to better understand how their decision impacts landowners in Missouri and Kansas.
