Congresswoman Tsongas, I appreciate your response to our plea for your support in advocating childhood cancer. Your efforts to increase funding to the NCI is admirable. However, the NCI, like most mainstream cancer organizations, woefully underfund any research into the causes, treatments, and cures for pediatric cancers. The NCI doesn't even have a pediatric cancer specialist on its board, despite repeated pleas. Please take the time to watch the 360 video. I guarantee it will open your eyes and, we hope, your heart!

Dear Congresswoman Niki Tsongas: Thank you for your words of support and encouragement in regards to our battle against childhood cancer! My son, who is currently 14 years old, is a two-time cancer survivor and will be celebrating his 10th anniversary of being cancer free this March 2013. He was 10 months old the first time he had cancer and 4 years old the second time. In the absence of a cure, the best we can hope for is support in our efforts to destroy this monster. Thank you so, so much for pledging yours!

  3. Today I was appointed by Speaker Boehner to serve as a conferee to help work out differences between the House and Senate 2013 Defense Authorization bills. I thank Speaker Boehner for appointing me to this role and look forward to working in the same bipartisan spirit to ensure our military men and women receive the most effective resources available in the most efficient way possible.
  4. Did you see the story in today’s Globe about Ymittos Candle Manufacturing Co. in Lowell? Ymittos is one of the last companies in the country to make historically authentic wax candles and recently provided candles for the movie ‘Lincoln’, which was based on a book by the Fifth District’s own Doris Kearns Goodwin. Check out the story’s accompanying video below:
  5. Congress must do the right thing and pass the middle class tax cuts. It is unacceptable to hold 98% of families and 97% of small businesses hostage in order to give households with incomes over $1 million a $160,000 tax cut. If you think that Congress should pass the middle class tax cuts, share this message and Tweet using #DoTheRightThing !
  6. Thank you to everyone who posted on my Wall or sent me a message about TheTruth365 Campaign. Your dedication to promoting child cancer research funding is democracy in action and deserves great credit. Since being elected to Congress, it has been my policy not to sign petitions, including those for causes about which I care deeply. Instead, when appropriate, I always offer to send a letter of supp...
ort to the organization collecting the petitions to clearly outline and register my position. And, in response to your advocacy, I am going to write just such a letter of support to TheTruth365 Campaign and will post a copy of it on my Facebook page. I fully support funding for all cancer research, including child cancers and throughout my career in Congress, I have helped lead the effort to increase funding for cancer research at the NIH. My family benefited from new and experimental therapies, and I have seen firsthand how innovative research can hold the promise for new preventions and therapies. Federal assistance is an important component of scientific research in our country and I will continue to support the very valuable work being done at the National Institutes of Health. Thank you again for your activism on this critical issue and I welcome your input on this or any other issue in the future.

  7. Yesterday we were reminded of the tenuous position of women in Afghanistan when the acting head of women’s affairs in an eastern province was assassinated as she traveled to work. Such cowardly acts make it clear that the US must put in place a legitimate plan to support Afghan women and not let the progress they have made since 2001 go to waste.
  8. Last night members of my staff and I volunteered at the Cor Unum Meal Center in Lawrence. Cor Unum provides thousands of meals a week to people in our community and it was a wonderful way to spend an evening during the holiday season.
  9. Last week I joined my colleagues on a letter calling for stronger protections for Afghan women and girls in the final version of the National Defense Authorization bill. As the letter outlines, Afghan women have made tremendous progress since 2001 and it is in the best interest of the United States that we help lay a foundation for women’s continued participation in their country’s future.

vists in our home state who have been so committed to advancing this important cause. Marriage equality is reflective of the principles of individual liberty and freedom that our nation was founded upon and we will be stronger when all Americans are able to enjoy these rights.

  12. New jobs report out today shows that we added more private sector jobs than expected and lowered unemployment to 7.7%. Our economy is still underperforming but the report makes it ever clearer that Congress must reach a compromise to avoid the fiscal cliff or risk sending our economy back into recession.
  13. Today is the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, an attack that my father, a civil engineer and colonel in the United States Air Force, survived. I am remembering, with pride, his service to our nation and the lessons he taught me about the meaning of sacrifice and service. I will continue to dedicate my time in Congress to honoring our commitment to those who serve on our behalf.
  14. This week Secretary Donley ordered all Air Force units to remove objects that objectify women and reexamine workplace culture. The Lackland investigation and final report made it clear that the Air Force must reexamine its culture and this announcement shows a step in the right direction.
  15. Congratulations to Groundwork Lawrence and JSI Research and Training Institute on their Environmental Justice grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency! This grant funds projects that raise awareness about environmental risks and help develop community-based improvement projects.

ostage in order to give a $250,000 tax cut to the top 2% of earners. A responsible plan that reduces the deficit in a balanced way is possible but we can’t afford to extend tax cuts for the wealthiest of Americans and get our deficit under control at the same time.

  18. Yesterday I attended a briefing by an impressive and courageous group of Afghan women’s rights leaders about how the U.S. can partner with Afghanistan to protect the progress that has been made for Afghan women. One of the most striking ob...
servations I made during my trips to Afghanistan is that if this country is to be successful, then women must be have a role in the economy, government, and society. As we draw down our military presence in Afghanistan, the U.S. must be cognizant of how we will ensure that women will continue to have a seat at the table.

  19. Check out this Sentinel & Enterprise editorial about the importance of the Massachusetts manufacturing base. I have been a strong advocate in Congress for the Make it in America agenda which provides tax incentives, workforce training, and ...
other support for the production of goods and services in the United States as opposed to overseas. The success of companies in the Fifth District demonstrate that manufacturing jobs can stay here, but we need to pursue policies at the federal level that support their efforts.

  20. Great meeting this morning with the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. Jobs in the Massachusetts clean energy industry grew by 11% last year, thanks in part to impressive work being done by the MassCEC. Our state has quickly become a national model for clean energy development because it’s growing our economy and helping to create jobs.
  21. The Department of Health and Human Services found that those in Massachusetts with Medicare have saved on average $644 on prescription drugs so far in 2012 thanks to health care reform. In 2013, seniors in the ‘donut-hole’ will see even greater savings thanks to higher discounts on both brand name and generic prescription drugs.
  22. For the first time, competitive lease sales for renewable energy in federal waters off the coast of Massachusetts will begin in 2013. These leases will pave the way to development of two major wind energy areas in the Atlantic. I applaud th...
e U.S. Department of the Interior for moving these lease sales forward but Congress still needs to act on a comprehensive strategy for American energy independence that decreases our reliance on fossil fuels and helps move us to a new energy future.

  26. This week I sent a letter to President Obama and Congressional leaders calling for immediate action to prevent us from going over the fiscal cliff. Congress must find a resolution that puts a balanced deficit reduction plan into place and helps spur economic growth.

  30. Today I was reelected by my colleagues to represent New England on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. This committee is charged with helping to determine which members will serve on which committees. I am honored to have been elected by my peers and look forward to our work in the 113th Congress.
  31. BP’s substandard safety precaution and the subsequent response to the disaster in the Gulf merits today’s suspension by the EPA. Any company that pleads guilty to the greatest environmental disaster in our nation’s history must be forced to reassess and sufficiently prove that a similar disaster will never happen again.
  32. I had a great tour of Hypertronics in Hudson today, a 39,000 square foot facility with over 140 employees that makes specialty connectors for the electronics industry. Companies like Hypertronics are slated to lose a large percentage of their government contracts if sequestration takes place in January. I am committed to finding a bipartisan path forward that doesn’t hurt companies like Hypertronics here in Massachusetts.
