Attending a U.S. Service Academy provides not only a competitive and high quality education but also sets apart a career of opportunity unmatched for our young people looking to achieve the highest goals and standards in the area of education and service.  As a West Point graduate, Congressman Guthrie highly encourages students interested in the military to look into a service academy.  The Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine Academies are all excellent institutions for higher education and training. Members of Congress may nominate applicants who meet the eligibility requirements established by law.  Representatives in Congress by law can only nominate those individuals who live or have a home of record in their congressional district.  To verify that you live in Kentucky’s Second District click here.  In addition to a Congressional Nomination, applicants may also apply to their Senators and the Vice–President.

Who is Eligible?

Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements as of 1 July of the nominating year:

  • Age – Must be at least 17 years but not past your 23rd birthday
  • Citizenship – Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Marital Status – Must be unmarried, not pregnant, no legal obligation to the support of children or other dependents.

Academy Day

In September of each year, Congressman Guthrie’s office conducts a Service Academy Information Day for all interested students and their parents to attend in an effort to gain more information on the various United States Service Academies.

The next Academy Day will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. CT at Carroll Knicely Conference Center located at 2355 Nashville Road in Bowling Green, Ky.  Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. CT. To RSVP for the event, click here. Directions to the Carroll Knicely Conference Center can be found here.

There is no cost and the half-day program typically consists of representatives from each academy providing information, as well as Q&A on their academies.  Sign-up information is sent to each school in August for students to attend.  If you are interested or know of someone who is, feel free to contact Gregg Reynolds in the Warren County Regional Office at (270) 842-9896 to find out more about the event scheduled this year.

Obtaining an Application

To obtain an application for nomination, please click here or on the PDF link at the bottom of this web page.  Congress Guthrie’s Academy Coordinator will be helpful in answering any questions you may have about this process as well.  Applications may be requested any time, but are due back to the Warren County Regional Office with all required information by October 15th of the student’s senior year of high school or nominating year if already graduated.

Nomination Process

Once the applications are received by Congressman Guthrie’s office, his Academy Board will meet to review and make their recommendations based on the eligibility requirements and qualification standards set forth by law.  Based on those recommendations, the nominations are made by the Academy Coordinator to the respective service academies.  Once nominations are made, a letter is sent to each applicant informing them of the action.  The application then falls under the jurisdiction of the academies for further processing and for the final determination of appointment offers.
