  1. A year ago I requested a full study of the taxpayer costs and benefits of oil, gas and mineral extraction on federal lands. The results just came in, and it turns out we don't even know how much hardrock mining is taking place on our own property. Industries are making billions of dollars from selling public resources without royalties. Read it and let people know.

  3. If any high income tax cut fans out there consider themselves fiscally responsible, remember this: "The Bush tax cuts accounted for half of the deficits during his tenure, and if made permanent, over the next decade would cost the U.S. Treasury more than Iraq, Afghanistan, the recession, TARP and the stimulus—combined."
  4. For those who missed it, here's my appearance on This Week With George Stephanopoulos from last Sunday. As I said, the biggest issue with the economy is jobs, not making retirees suffer more. For business people the issue is needing paying customers instead of conservatives handing out some top marginal tax cut.
  5. I'm going to be on This Week With George Stephanopoulos this Sunday to talk about the fiscal negotiations. I'm glad to represent the sane, majority view that we can't keep making Wall Street happy at everyone else's expense. Thumbs up if you agree, and please tune in!
  6. If anyone tells you the Simpson-Bowles plan has any merit, just ask them what's in it they like so much and see if they know what it actually contains. Most of its supporters have no idea. We need a serious, simple plan that creates jobs and protects retirees. Some people just seem to think making working people suffer is a sign of how thoughtful they are about the economy.
  7. I want to hear from you about these year-end fiscal negotiations. I'm supporting a plan that keeps current tax rates for every dollar earned up to $250,000 and goes back to the previous, more sensible rate for higher earnings. We need to invest in job creation, because that's stronger economic medicine than austerity and cat food for grandparents. What do you want to see Washington do?
  8. There's a good, timely reminder of all the spending cuts we've already put into law. It's time to talk revenue. We cut $1.5 trillion in the Budget Control Act and now conservatives are demanding more before they'll even touch tax rates for the richest. It's just not responsible or honest governing. If you want an all-cuts government plan, you're not living in the real world. Revenue is a big part of the equation.
  9. The Los Angeles Times has a good story about those of us trying to get some real jobs legislation passed, even in this climate of ignoring the issue and talking about cuts to Medicare as the cure for all ills. The media is missing the story...
, pure and simple. We need jobs, and that's what's going to get the economy working again. People employed and paying taxes. Not cuts to school lunch programs. It's clear, and the people have spoken.
