Rep. Brad Miller's Statement on Education Grants for Local Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Washington, DC – The U.S. Department of Education announces $227.9 million in grants to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country, including four in the 13th Congressional District.

"Investments in institutions of higher education are essential to ensuring the U.S. continues to compete globally," said Rep. Miller. "This funding means HBCUs will continue to thrive and share their rich traditions for all students."

The Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant program is administered by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education and will be awarded to 96 Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The five-year grants will enable HBCUs to establish or strengthen academic and student services, campus infrastructure, faculty development, financial management systems, and endowment-building capacity.

The following are details of the grant awards to HBCUs in the 13th District:

  • Bennett College (Greensboro) - $1,457,849
  • North Carolina A&T State University (Greensboro) — $5,246,940
  • St. Augustine's University (Raleigh) — $1,638,519
  • Shaw University (Raleigh) — $2,467,589
