News: Press Releases

(DETROIT) – Today, Representative John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) released the following statement in response to reports of the serious situation developing in Israel and Gaza:

“After nearly a week of cross border attacks, I remain concerned that the hostilities in Israel and Gaza have the potential to escalate, which could lead to an additional unnecessary loss of life on both sides of the conflict,” said Conyers.

“I applaud President Obama’s decision to send Secretary Clinton to the region with the goal of achieving a ceasefire between the two sides. A ceasefire that ends rocket fire on Israel, alleviates the need for ground operations, and prevents further civilian casualties will benefit both Israel and the residents of Gaza. “Moving forward, I encourage the Obama Administration to engage in a robust, renewed diplomatic effort aimed at achieving a two-state agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.  A resolution of this conflict that meets the core interests of both parties is the only way to marginalize extremists like Hamas and ensure long-term peace and security in the region.”
