Rep. Green Honors 47th Anniversary of Medicare Becoming Law

Houston –  Rep. Gene Green honored the 47th anniversary of the enactment of Medicare.  President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law on July 30, 1965.

Rep. Green stated, “Today, we celebrate the tremendous success of Medicare in providing health care security to seniors and people with disabilities.  Medicare has transformed the lives of Americans for generations, and I strongly support strengthening Medicare to ensure that it remains available for future generations.”

Today, Medicare provides comprehensive health care coverage to 48 million Americans, including 40 million seniors and 8 million people under 65 with disabilities. 

Congressman Green celebrated with the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans at their Medicare 47th Anniversary Celebration in Houston.

Congressman Green also noted that the Affordable Care Act of 2010, which he helped write and amend, has allowed over 1,010,000 people with Medicare have received free preventive services in the first five months of 2012.  This includes key preventive services such as mammograms and colonoscopies and a free Annual Wellness Visit.
