Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, and members of the Buffalo and Erie Country Naval and Military Park 1812 Celebration Committee, and U. S. Navy Rear Adm. Greg Nosal, Commander, Carrier Strike Group Two, will hold a press conference tomorrow at 11 a.m., on the steps of Buffalo City Hall to announce Buffalo Navy Week and the Commemoration of the War of 1812, which will be held Sept. 10-17, 2012.
Also expected to attend are Cong. Brian Higgins (27th Dist.), Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, Lackawanna Mayor Geoffrey Szymanski and Consul General for Canada in Buffalo Marta Moszczenska.
Two U.S. Navy ships, one U.S. Coast Guard ship and one ship from Canada will be in Buffalo during the week-long celebration of our maritime services. Buffalo Navy Week also will commemorate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, during which Buffalo and the area played a significant role.
U.S. Navy ships participating in this year's Buffalo Navy Week are the frigate USS DeWert (FFG 45) and coastal patrol craft USS Hurricane (PC 3). The U. S. Coast Guard cutter is USCGC Katmai Bay (WTGB 101). The Canadian ship is the frigate HMCS Ville de Quebec (FFH 332).
The Hurricane and the Katmai Bay will moor in downtown Buffalo near the Buffalo Naval Park. DeWert and Ville de Quebec will be moored at the Gateway Industrial Park in Lackawanna.
One of 15 signature events around the country, Buffalo Navy Week is an opportunity for area citizens to see their maritime services up close, and for Sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel to contribute to the community. This year also commemorates the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and is a salute to all Sailors and Marines who fought gallantly in that conflict, who served in all our nation's conflicts since then, and who are defending freedom around the world.
