Hoyer: America Needs Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Not More Political Stunts

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today:

"Every single Member of the House of Representatives understands that we must secure our nation's borders.  In fact, House Democrats have tried numerous different times to improve border security funding that would have resulted in more border patrol agents, detention beds, and immigration and customs agents.

"However, rather than work with Democrats to achieve real immigration reform, House Republicans have continually tried to exploit this issue for partisan political gain. Today, this Do-Less-Than-the-Do-Nothing Republican Congress considered legislation that Republican leaders designed not to address border security but to score political points.

"If the Republican leaders were serious about border security, they would sit down with Democrats and seek, on a bipartisan basis, to enact real comprehensive immigration reform that would beef up security along our borders.  The American people believe that this Republican Congress is not enacting legislation that meets the needs of our nation and our people.  When it comes to comprehensive immigration reform - and so many other critical issues - they are absolutely correct."
