San Francisco -- Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the ceasefire agreement reached to halt the violence in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip:

"Today's agreement is critical to Israel's security and regional stability, and I commend President Obama, Secretary Clinton, and the entire Administration for their work to seek and find a solution.  American leadership ensured the Iron Dome was there to protect Israeli towns throughout this conflict, and we will continue to support Israel and work with our allies to prevent further violence against innocent civilians.

"Throughout the recent assault against the Israeli people, President Obama and Members of Congress have not wavered from our firm stand: Israel has a right to defend herself, and no family should be forced to endure the ongoing fear of indiscriminate violence and rocket attacks in their homes, schools, and communities.

"We commend the Israeli government for working with the Egyptian government, which played a crucial, constructive role in reaching this agreement, as we strive toward peace and security in the region."
