NGAUS Truman Award Reception

Remarks of Senator Daniel K. Akaka

Sat, November 5, 2011

Aloha!

Mahalo - thank you - to General Osserman for your kind introduction and for all your hard work with the Hawaii National Guard.  Looks like the Hawaii National Guard sent some reinforcements - mahalo for making me feel at home.

Before I begin, I'd like to recognize and say mahalo nui loa to General Craig McKinley for being here, and thank you to Senator Inouye for being here tonight as well.

So, General McKinley, mahalo nui loa again to you, I appreciate your outstanding leadership of the National Guard and I want you to know that I support the Director of the Guard Bureau having a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  I also want to say mahalo nui loa to General Gus Hargett for his outstanding leadership of NGAUS.

I also want to send my aloha to all the other Guard and NGAUS leaders, honorees and corporate partners who are here this evening.

I applaud you for representing the interests and priorities of the nearly 45,000 current and former Army and Air National Guard officers, who have served their country honorably both at home and around the world.
I commend you for all the work you do on behalf of those heroic men and women.

The National Guard Association of the United States has been a great partner throughout my career in Congress, especially in my efforts to uphold our nation's responsibility, our sacred commitment, to those who bravely serve.  To enhance education, health care, and support services for our veterans and servicemembers.

That is why I am so honored to receive this prestigious award from NGAUS.  I regret that I was unable to make it to the conference in Milwaukee, but I am pleased to be with you tonight at your Legion de Lafayette induction ceremony.

I am honored to join an esteemed list of past Truman Award recipients.  This award has been given to three Presidents and some of my most honored Congressional colleagues including - Dan Inouye, Sonny Montgomery, Bob Dole, and John Warner, as well as to the only honorary veteran of the U.S. armed services, Bob Hope.

As you know, these are all great people - and true patriots!  To be placed on a list with these and the other recipients of this award is truly humbling.

So again I say, mahalo nui loa for this great honor.  I send you my fondest aloha as you continue working for our country's Guard members.

God Bless you - God Bless our servicemembers, veterans, and their families - and God bless the United States of America!
