Your Health, Your Choice

This Wednesday, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released new mammogram screening recommendations – moving the recommended age to start receiving mammograms up from 40 to 50 years old. This has caused confusion and worry among American women and their families.

But to be clear, the U.S. Preventive Task Force is an outside independent panel of doctors and scientists who make recommendations. They don’t set federal policy and they don’t determine what services are covered by the federal government. And while the Task Force presented some new evidence for consideration, federal policies remain unchanged.

We know that regular mammograms and other preventative screenings can save lives – and that’s why we worked so hard to pass the historic health insurance reform bill earlier this month. Under the Affordable Health Care for America Act, millions more men and women across the country will have access to regular screenings and preventative measures that will help us all stay healthier, longer. Our bill is all about making sure that no one can come between you and your doctor when it comes to your health care.

So the decision on whether (or when) to get a mammogram remains YOURS. And under the Democratic health insurance reform bill, many more screenings, tests and preventative procedures will become your decisions again – not your insurance company’s.
