Congressman John Sarbanes, Representing Maryland's Third District

Dear Friend,

Service and volunteerism have always been core American values.  Neighbors helping one another is a very effective way to revitalize and energize a community.  Providing for people who are less fortunate than ourselves raises the standard of living for everyone.  During difficult economic times, we have always found a way to pull together as a nation and we must find a way to do so again.

We recently marked the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a national day of service as well as the anniversary of the creation of AmeriCorps, our nation’s largest and most successful service program. These events provide an opportunity to reflect on the impact of service and volunteerism in our communities, and how civic engagement can help us rebuild America. Here in Maryland, VolunteerMaryland.org has a number of resources for those who want to volunteer.

I had the opportunity to visit this month with Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake and the Maryland Food Bank, just a couple of the organizations in Maryland that rely on the work of volunteers. To read more about my visits and national service program opportunities please visit my blog.
